The latest birthday portrait of Queen Mary of Denmark's eldest daughter Princess Isabella has been released - and it features a detail many often fail to pick up on.

While most royal snaps are taken by professionals, the doting mum-of-four is almost always the photographer behind her children's candid birthday portraits.

And she usually includes one or more of the family pets in her snaps for a personal touch.

Isabella, as well as her siblings Prince Christian, 18, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, both 13, posed with animals in their birthday photos.

In the 17-year-old princess's birthday photo, she is sitting beside one of the family's pet dogs, Coco.

'To mark her birthday, Her Majesty The Queen has taken new pictures of the Princess together with one of the Royal Family's dogs Coco,' the royal family announced in an Instagram post.

It isn't the first time Border Collie Coco has made an appearance in the royal family's birthday portraits.

For Josephine and Vincent's 11th birthday, the twins posed with Coco and her litter mate when they were just puppies.

Mary's dogs Grace, and Ziggy, who passed away in 2017, have also featured in the family's portraits.

Their horses and even a koala have also made appearances in photos of the royal children.

In her latest birthday snap, Isabella was wearing a beige blazer and plain white t-shirt and accessorised with hoop earrings.

She also donned a $3,767 18K gold 'B' necklace from jewellery brand Dulong suggesting her family and friends refer to her by an abbreviated nickname Belle or Bella.

Isabella wore her brunette tresses down in a wavy blowdry and opted for simple, natural makeup with a hint of blush.

In the first snap, she is seen grinning as she wraps her arm around Cocoa, whereas the second one featured a more serious posed-up monochrome picture of the pair.

Queen Mary has a penchant for photography and regularly posts snaps she's taken herself on the Danish royal social media pages.

These includes snaps from around the palace, candid images of family and arty garden photos.

She also gets behind the camera on family holidays and shares behind-the-scenes sneak peeks in surprise collages posted online.

The fact she's continuing to do so as Queen shows her commitment to a modern monarchy - something she and husband King Frederik have been vocal about since taking the reigns in January.
